TheMovement

Founded in 2020, theMovement is a small, trauma-informed charity that empowers women facing extreme disadvantages—including homelessness, abuse, and mental health challenges—through free, safe, and supportive exercise sessions. Despite being led by just two part-time staff, the charity’s impact spans 10 London boroughs, working with over 25 partner organisations and a network of more than 50 trained volunteer instructors. theMovement removes barriers to physical activity by providing clothing, equipment, and trauma-sensitive environments, enabling women—often isolated from mainstream services—to heal and build confidence. Rooted in community consultation and lived experience, the charity continuously adapts its approach based on participant feedback. After a difficult 2023, theMovement rebounded in 2024, training 66 instructors and delivering over 200 sessions to more than 100 women, all of whom reported positive outcomes. The charity has already matched this output in early 2025, now running 20 sessions weekly. Beyond direct support, theMovement influences broader health practices through a CPD course on trauma-informed exercise provision. Its strength lies not just in numbers but in personal transformation—offering women agency, community, and hope. With minimal resources but deep commitment, theMovement exemplifies the impact a small charity can have by centering compassion, inclusion, and the voices of those it serves.
