The Media and Strategic Communications Team

Refugee Council

The Refugee Council is the nation’s refugee charity. They help people who have escaped war and persecution to rebuild their lives, integrate into communities, and play their part in Britain.

The Media and Strategic Communications Team (2024-25) have worked extensively to change the narrative on refugees in Britain. They have achieved this not only through securing extensive media coverage in politically diverse outlets, but also by underpinning their interventions with research, insights and strategic communication. They harness the Refugee Council’s seven decades of expertise in the refugee sector, combined with lived experience stories of clients, to reframe refugee issues through an empathetic and accurate lens. Working in a media context that is often hostile towards refugees, they have consistently shown themselves able to garner wide-ranging coverage and develop fruitful media partnerships. They use media coverage to advance the organisation’s aims and the work of other teams, such as providing stories for fundraising appeals, and using their leverage to hold the government to account.
