The Listening Place

The Listening Place (TLP) provides free, regular, face-to-face support to people who feel suicidal. A team of 800+ carefully selected and trained volunteers deliver fortnightly 50-minute appointments at one of our three London sites (Pimlico, Kings Cross and Hammersmith). They offer a calm, non-judgmental and confidential space for people to talk frankly about wanting to end their own lives. It’s simple but it works; last year 78% of visitors who attended appointments and completed a review with us reported reductions in their suicidal feelings.

Effective and responsive support for those who feel suicidal can be hard to find in the UK, with NHS mental health services very overstretched. TLP always reaches out within 24 hours following a referral (either from the NHS, another charity or a direct self-referral) and offers a first appointment within 7 days. We are open 9am-9pm, seven days a week, and are currently supporting around 2,000 people each month.

TLP received 8,856 referrals this year (an 11% increase on last year) and supported a total of 7,668 visitors. We scheduled 44,975 appointments and made 6,774 additional check-in calls for high or imminent risk visitors between appointments.
