The Bread and Butter Thing

The Bread and Butter Thing

The Bread and Butter Thing (Bread and Butter) is tackling two of the UK’s most pressing issues, food insecurity and food waste, whilst supporting over 100,000 of its members across 27 local authorities. Founded in 2016, Bread and Butter has grown into the UK’s largest B2C food redistribution charity, delivering 21.4 million meals in 2024 alone and saving 9,005 tonnes of food from going to waste.

But the initiative offers more than affordable food. It provides dignity, connection, and hope. Through over 140 mobile food clubs, we reach isolated and overlooked communities, where 72% of members now feel more connected and 58% have made new friendships. Our work is member-led, community-powered and data-driven, with thousands of volunteers giving us 161,000 hours last year.

We’ve reduced food bank dependency, improved diets with 93% of our members saving money. We’ve amplified unheard voices through national media, championed policy change, and partnered with 200+ food suppliers to build a more sustainable, inclusive food system.

Bread and Butter is not just feeding people, we’re rebuilding community resilience and changing the narrative on food support. That’s why we believe we’re not just a charity doing great work, we’re a charity driving lasting change.
