Scottish Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence

Beatson Cancer Charity and Brain Tumour Research Charity

In 2024, Beatson Cancer Charity (BCC) and Brain Tumour Research Charity (BTR) formed a partnership to address the funding gap in brain tumour research—brain tumours kill more people under 40 than any other cancer but receive only 1% of research funding. Their goal was to create a Scottish Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence, raise £2.4 million over five years, expedite treatments to clinical trials, increase awareness, and attract top research talent.

The partnership leveraged BTR’s expertise in brain tumour research and BCC’s strong community connections across Scotland. Challenges included coordinating fundraising without competition, aligning branding and marketing, and balancing the wider remit of partners. Transparent communication and a shared vision underpinned the success.

In its first year, the partnership raised over 50% of its funding target, launched the Centre of Excellence in January 2025, with the successful recruitment of key staff and saw exciting progress towards patient trials. Awareness efforts led to a parliamentary group and significant media exposure. The initiative gained recognition in parliament and became a model for other charities. With strong momentum, this collaboration is driving breakthrough research, offering hope for improved brain tumour treatments and supporting wider brain tumour research collaborations.
