Leave for Every Loss
Miscarriage UK
Currently, statutory leave applies only after 24 weeks, forcing those experiencing miscarriage or other types of pregnancy loss to rely on sick leave or employer discretion. Partners have no entitlements at all, leaving thousands returning to work while still coping with the physical and emotional impact of loss, reinforcing silence and stigma.
We set out to change the law, and succeeded. The UK Government committed to extending bereavement leave to include pregnancy loss before 24 weeks, a landmark shift that will support an estimated 250,000+ people each year when the Employment Rights Act comes in to force in 2027.
Our campaign combined lived experience with compelling evidence and public support, with 89% of people agreeing that pregnancy loss at any stage can be experienced as a bereavement. Voices from our community were central, giving evidence to the Women and Equalities Committee and sharing powerful personal stories across national media.
We built widespread backing, including high-profile support from Myleene Klass and Elizabeth Day, helping drive national conversation and political pressure.
The campaign achieved over 1,000 media mentions, 2.7 million social impressions and 9,299 shares. Our campaign webpage appeared over 13,000 times in search results. A parliamentary event in the Houses of Parliament marked this success and the voices that made change happen.
