Launch a Memory Tracker

Launch a Memory is an in-memory product that allows supporters to donate and have a name displayed on a brand-new Shannon Class lifeboat. Supporters often have an emotional connection with the location where the boat is based, and it’s important for them to feel connected with the lifeboat and have opportunities to visit the station to see their submitted name up close.

When we had to come up with a new direction and use an existing lifeboat from our ‘relief fleet’ (with no fixed lifeboat station), we also needed to come up with a way to ensure supporters could still feel connected to the lifeboat in lieu of a place to visit.

The solution – an innovative lifeboat tracker, created in house by our Data Department, that provided real-time updates on the lifeboat’s location, its speed, bearing and weather conditions. By integrating GPS data and live updates, donors could see where the boat was operating and how their loved one was saving lives at sea.

Following its launch, the tracker was very quickly considered a top performing RNLI product by both views and time spent, and achieved its objective by creating a deep emotional connection between donors and the cause.
