Spadework

Kris Healey first visited Spadework at the age of six. Now, as CEO, he leads the charity with compassion, authenticity, and an unshakeable commitment to inclusion, belonging, and community.

Since becoming CEO in 2017, Kris has transformed Spadework into a dynamic, people-first charity that enables individuals to be more independent, feel less isolated, and live happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives. Based on a five-acre site in Kent, Spadework supports adults with learning and other disabilities, people living with dementia, carers, and those seeking wellbeing or bereavement support.

2024 marked Spadework’s 40th year — and its most impactful yet. Under Kris’s leadership, the charity launched new bereavement and dementia services, introduced a memorial garden and memory tree, and hosted Spadefest — a music festival co-created with beneficiaries. Despite wider funding pressures, Kris has continued to grow the charity’s reach, its social enterprises, and its role as a community anchor.

Kris’s leadership is rooted in human connection. Whether he’s hosting a podcast with service users or unblocking drains on-site, his belief is simple: to lead well, you must never forget who you’re leading for. At Spadework, that means creating a place where everyone feels safe, valued — and like they belong.
