Julie Dawn Gray, Chairperson of Back on the Map since 2014, is nominated for a Third Sector Award in recognition of her exceptional leadership, long-standing commitment, and transformative impact on one of Sunderland’s most disadvantaged communities. Under her guidance, the organisation has significantly expanded both its reach and impact, delivering community-led regeneration, housing, youth and health initiatives that have improved the lives of thousands.

Julie’s leadership is defined by compassion, integrity and a deep commitment to equity and opportunity. She has given extensive voluntary service, ensuring that Back on the Map remains rooted in resident voice and inclusive practice. Key achievements include the delivery of major urban regeneration projects, the expansion of affordable housing supporting over 100 families, and the development of a five-year strategy that increased service delivery by 60% while establishing dedicated youth and health hubs.

Her leadership has also driven impactful youth programmes engaging over 300 young people annually, alongside pioneering community-led approaches to tackling health inequalities. Julie’s influence extends beyond programme delivery—she has mentored staff, strengthened partnerships, and championed sustainable, community-led change.
