Change the Record

Amnesty International UK

In March 2025, Amnesty International UK (AIUK) launched 'Change the Record' - a groundbreaking collaboration with musicians designed to engage young people with human rights. AIUK hosted an event with Grammy nominated artist Mahalia to deliver an all-female showcase of emerging music and spoken word talent, focused on women's rights and online misogyny.

Held at London's Jazz Cafe, this powerful event held a space for reflection, community and resistance for 500+ attendees aged 16-25. Mahalia shared the findings of AIUK's research into online misogyny with over 3000 young people, which found the shocking scale and impact of misogynistic social media content. With less than half of respondents reporting social media to be a safe space for women, AIUK used this event as an opportunity to raise awareness of women's rights and demand accountability from social media platforms.

Videos from Change the Record's social media campaign went viral online, engaging millions of people, and Mahalia's interview about the event on Radio One gained widespread coverage. By utilising music and conversations around the Netflix show Adolescence, this event and campaign helped articulate human rights in a way that was relevant and engaging for young people all over the world.
