Break Free From The Feeling is a powerful, behaviour-changing campaign that helped redefine how gambling harm is understood – and, crucially, how people seek help.

Developed for GamCare, the campaign tackled a critical challenge: a sustained decline in calls to the National Gambling Helpline, driven not by lack of need, but by shame, stigma and a failure to recognise the problem. Many people struggling didn’t see themselves reflected in traditional messaging – meaning they never took the first step towards support.

This campaign changed that.

By focusing on the emotional reality of gambling harm, rather than the behaviour itself, Break Free From The Feeling helped bring hidden struggles to the surface. Using striking visual metaphors, it gave people a language to understand their feelings – and a way out.

Delivered through highly targeted media in moments of vulnerability, the campaign didn’t just raise awareness, it drove action. It reached millions, generated over a million visits to support content, and led to a dramatic increase in Helpline calls.

Most importantly, it helped thousands of people take a first step they may never otherwise have taken.
