The Mission to Seafarers

Seafarers transport 90% of everything we use. They are an essential workforce, but their well-being and safety are often overlooked. Working in some of the world’s most challenging environments means that stress, poor mental health, and isolation are prevalent. To help fund The Mission to Seafarers (MtS) global work in support of crew welfare, the ‘Adventure Race Japan’s Volunteer Committee organised and hosted a two-day challenge event in Japan. The Committee deserves recognition for its trailblazing approach to fundraising and raising awareness in a challenging environment.

The Committee had three goals: raising funds for seafarers, increasing awareness within the maritime industry, and broadening MtS’ network of supporters. They exceeded expectations by raising an outstanding US$1.85m in 2025, up from US$1.3m in 2023. They also increased participation from 64 teams to 100 by leveraging their networks, creating a waitlist, and demonstrating the event’s widespread appeal, with 26 countries represented.

The Committee faced numerous challenges, including building the event from scratch, overcoming cultural barriers, and securing industry support; yet, the small team orchestrated this significant event without the assistance of an external event management agency. Their visionary leadership, resourcefulness, and commitment make them deserving of the Volunteer Team of the Year Award.
