The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is a charity dedicated to preventing male suicide because 76% of all suicides are male. The small but dedicated fundraising team at CALM grew from just to one full time member of staff to 4.5 (FTE) between 2016 and 2017. This investment in fundraising led to a successful year in 16/17, with a partnership with Heads Together and income of over £1.5million. Entering the 2017/18 financial year, the team had the challenge of maintaining this momentum whilst also increasing income, but without the benefit of the high-profile Heads Together partnership. They did not have the luxury of a high-profile cause; big expenditure budgets; or copious challenge event places to help them reach their targets. Yet, the team demonstrated they can take advantage of all opportunities to maximise income for the charity. Having been set a target of £1.2million in 2017/18, the team worked on diversifying income streams, improving internal processes to increase capacity and better integrating fundraising to CALM’s campaigns and went on to raise £2.04million (£7.80 for every £1 spent). This has led to further investment in the team which now has 5.6 (FTE) staff members and a 18/19 target of £2.8million.
