The Coalfields Regeneration Trust is the only organisation dedicated to regenerating Britain’s coalfield communities. Since 1999 the organisation has invested nearly £300m in activities that have supported over 25,000 people back into work, created over 5,000 jobs, improved the skills of over 1m people and benefitted over 2m.
Of the 5.5m people living in these communities, 14% of all adults of working age are out of work and receiving benefits, 20% have no qualifications, there are only 50 jobs per 100 people and over 11% have long-term health problems. These are the challenges the Coalfields Regeneration Trust is addressing against a backdrop of austerity.
Responding to a challenge from Government to become self-financing, the Coalfields Regeneration Trust launched a property investment and development subsidiary, CRT Property Investments Ltd.
The company provides a return that will continue to allow the Coalfields Regeneration Trust to create programmes that meet with the diverse and complex needs of the coalfield communities across England, Scotland and Wales.
With many coalfield communities falling into the top 30% most deprived in the country, there is still a lot of work to be done to restore these areas to the thriving villages and towns they once were.
